An
interview with the Host and Executive Producer, Mimi
Geerges
Mimi, what makes radio tick for you? Why
does it intrigue you, this industry?
Radio forces the participants to speak with more
clarity and detail, because they cannot rely on pictures
to explain themselves—they have to paint a picture
with their words. The listener also has to pay more
attention to the spoken word. I don’t like watching
talking heads on TV, but I do want the information.
I can get this information while driving or cooking
or doing something else.
What makes you like it so much that you decided
to become your own talk radio host?
When I got out of college, I started volunteering
for the Diane Rehm show on WAMU in Washington, DC.
I was discontent with my job and my whole career as
an engineer and had always flirted with the idea of
being a journalist. I didn’t particularly like
writing, but I’ve always enjoyed talking to
people. I ‘m curious about a lot of different
topics. I’ve been wanting to do this for 10
years, telling myself it just wasn’t feasible,
but now I’m going after my dream. I think I
can offer something new and valuable to the broadcast
radio world.
So at the end of the day, what makes you satisfied
with your day’s work?
That I offered people the opportunity to learn something
new—and the same goes for me, that I have thought
about or learned something new. I think many of us
have surface knowledge about different issues, and
I like to provide people with the opportunity to delve
deeper, create informed opinions.
What kinds of listeners will find The Mimi
Geerges Show appealing?
I think that the show appeals to anyone who wants
to go beyond the “sound byte,” to anyone
who wants to get underneath the surface on a wide
variety of issues that are relevant today. We also
look for guests who may not be famous but who have
valuable and interesting experiences.
What is your role as a talk radio host?
I strongly believe that my role is to give listeners
a chance to learn something new and to create their
own informed opinions. There’s too much junk
on the airwaves that is either on one side of the
political spectrum or another. I offer a unique perspective
and come from a different background than most people
in the media. I’m not an angry conservative
or a liberal bleeding heart. I don’t think as
a radio talk show host I should be providing “the
world according to Mimi,” but to allow different
ideas and opinions to come out.
